Dillon's--What I got...

Although our paper didn't advertise the Green Giant Steamers like they did last week, they were still included on the sale! Sorry I'm late posting this--we've been to the hospital in and out and although i started this Saturday, I'm just now finishing it Tuesday and looking fwd to tomorrow's ads!!

On my 1st trip, I got:

  • 8 Green Giant Steamers $1.50/1

  • 1 Heinz Ketchup $2.00/1

  • 1 Chex Mix $2.19/1

  • 2 Nabisco crackers $$2.39/1
  • 5 Nature Valley Granola Bars {THANKS, Jodie for the extra Qs!!} $2.59/1
  • 12 Hormel Chili with beans $1.00/1
  • 1 Velveeta $4.68/1

    COUPONS/DISCOUNTS:
  • MegaSale $5.00/10 x 3 {30 items = $15.00 savings}
  • 6 $.55/2 chili, dbls $1/2

  • $2/2 Nabisco

  • $1/1 Velveeta

  • 5 $.50 Nature Valley, dbls $1/1

  • Cfire EQ $.60

I ended up paying $13.00 + $2.00 tax and getting back a $3.50 catalina that I turned around and came back in to use on 10 more items......PLUS I found 2 Johnson and Johnson items on clearance for less than $2 which I used $2/1 MQ for BUT they rang up for $3.19, i didn't catch it till almmost home, so i called and I am supposed to take them and the receipt in for a refund--I believe their policy is a full refund if it rings up wrong--so WE will see!!!

ALSO--FYI--Dillon's accepts expired coupons up to 2 weeks past expiration--that is their official policy I got from the mgr. (darn--the month old sour cream ones couldn't work--thanks anyway Jodie!!)

Cancer

Cancer. . .what an ominous word. . .you don't want to hear it from friends and family and you sure don't want to hear it from a doctor. We've never been affected by it closely--it's always been someone else's dad, someone else's husband, someone else's grandpa......

My FIL has been sick and losing weight for a couple months. He finally went to the dr. a couple weeks ago. In these few weeks, he is now so malnourished, he's almost unrecognizable.
Yesterday, he went in for laproscopic surgery to see what they were dealing with for sure....yeah, we talked a little about the possibilities--knew it was probably cancer--but it's diagnosed now. . .cancer. . .cancer with no cure. . .cancer all over his diaphragm and stomach among other things. . .cancer spots on his liver and intestines. . .incurable cancer. . .cancer that has grown rapidly in 6 months. . .cancer that may or may not slow and respond to chemo--if he sticks with it. . .cancer. . .

We'd appreciate prayers of anyone and everyone. I'll share what my 8yo dd H prayed last night

Dear God, please help Papa feel better. We want him to stay with us, God, but if you have to take him, that's okay, but we really want him here.

Imagine tears coming down so hard that she is barely understandable at the end......then imagine my 6yo ds J starting laughing so hard he shakes the couch.....it made us girls giggle a little too--he doesn't know how to deal with seeing his strong capable Papa hooked up to so many cords and unable to even pick them up--he dealt by laughing and crying...it did our hearts good.

How do I organize My coupons?

WELL...so glad you asked---we've all seen the little accordian coupon filers that are pretty nifty and cheap--but way too small for everything I'm doing.
There are several good ideas and as much as I LOVE seeing the picture albums and binders, it wasn't quite enough for me either--too time consuming!!
See here for the top 5 ways to organize your coupons--WONDERFUL ideas!
But the ONE that they do NOT mention is mine (I'm just odd like that!) and I'm loving how this works!
  1. My photo album (unused little baby album) holds all my misc. coupons not from inserts that I have cut out.
  2. FILE FOLDERS
--I am labeling the top of my red plum or smart source insert with the date it came {ex. 1/4/09}, then filing them in order. right now, I have a folder with Nov08-Jan 11, 09 and started a new one with Jan 18, 09-?, but I will re-sort soon since I've gotten several more older inserts from our recycling center paper dumpster [yes--I dumpster dive for coupons].
BeCentsable wrote: So what to do?
When you get your Sunday paper you will file each insert by date in a folder or notebook for later reference.
It may be helpful to you if you glance through the coupons and the sales fliers each week but you DO NOT need to clip the coupons yet.
  3. When it comes time to shop, I have my notebook that I list out all my items at one particular store (ie dillon's Mega Sale and various items, plus items to look at and see what prices are). For Walgreens, after I make a list of items, I'll list each transaction I want to make, then I check off items as I find them in the store (sometimes they don't have everything on my list or I find a great deal not listed).
  4. I bring everything with me, but first, I clip coupons that i am using for that shopping trip and divide them into different sections--maybe in a baggie labeled with the store name or just in a different place in my wallet. My bag holds my file folders, photo organizer, sale ads, and my all important notebook. Unused clipped coupons will go into the photo organizer.

That is JUST ME......what works for you?!?

Nature Valley Bars at Dillons

I found coupons in the 1/4 SS in order to make this deal work....I hope it is for all Dillon's stores...but I can't guarantee a thing till I try it myself!

WalMart Deals 1/28

Got the WalMart Ad in the mailbox today and see a couple interesting things....

What Does WalMart Win In?
--although these prices seem to be good, I usually buy MORE when I enter WalMart, so unless it's something I need or use regularly, it may be worth a few extra pennies to get it elsewhere.....

Heinz Ketchup 64 oz rollback price $3.00 {from $3.97}
(Dillons has 32-36oz. in their Mega Buy 10 Sale for $1.50, so it's about the same price--I think Aldi's off-brand is cheaper than either one though)
Still looking for and asking for ketchup coupons!!!

Avacados $.68/1
PriceCutter has them on sale for $.79 and Dillons is $10/10
NOPE--nevermind--aldi's is advertising $.49/1

Sparkle Paper Towels 8-rolls $5.97
Dillons advertise $6.99 for an 8-roll, but if they have a smaller pack, it may be worth it to dbl MQ $.50/1 {1/11 RP} to get $1/1 instead of just $.50/1 at WalMart

I know that you can get great prices on Johnson & Johnson baby products too--it's just not advertised! I had $3/3 (got baby bar soap)and still have $2/1 any Johnson's product that I'm holding on to until I can use it for FREE stuff.....click here.....

Know of a deal I missed?
Please contact me or leave a comment!

Ah, Snow -- free ice cream from God!!

It seems like it's been a few years since we've had a really good snow. We've had ice, we've had dry dustings of snow and we've had little bits of good snow, but now it looks like close to 4 inches (yeah--that's a good snow for us SW Missourians).

Thankfully, it isn't as bad as last year's ice storms with power outages all over. Just really cold...

you know, perfect weather for ice cream!!
--dh went out to gather up 2 bowls of snow (avoiding neighborhood cat tracks of course) and we added milk, vanilla, and sugar/splenda, mixing well. It cost us less than $1 for about 2 quarts of ice cream (including chocolate syrup). DH also added cold coffee (leftover from this morning) to some for his own creation--"Mocha Snow" drink--mmmm, yummy!!

Free Diet Dr. Pepper

Thanks to my updates from www.bargainbriana.com, I heard about this first thing this morning! Sign up for your free 20 oz. or 2 liter! A coupon should be mailed to you in 4-6 weeks.

Well, after my first trip back to Dillon's in YEARS, I am sold on their dbl coupon policy and sales which make a 30minute trip worth it occassionnally ;)

Lapbooks we've done..

Unfortunately, I don't have a homemade pdf for you of all our lapbooks or even a "how-to" like some bloggers have done. (see here) BUT, I will tell you what we have done and some of the specific resources for each topic. I hope to eventually replace our missing digital camera and upload pics for everyone. I started out just wanting an "art" avenue and a place to store all the STUFF that accumulates with school and kids in general. We found legal sized folders for cheap at first, so our folds were different (for #1 and #3) and --the big plus-- they fit on our bookshelf for the kids, which regular lapbooks do not!!

1. Butterflies
There was a free unit study summer '08 that I downloaded from currclick.com. That, plus our regular Sonlight science, this and that found online, AND happening to find caterpillars to "raise" in a friend's garden, made our butterfly study complete.
[I have a bookmark under my "freebies" file for http://www.currclick.com/. I love their freebie selection.]
Homeschool Share--lapbook
Homeschool Helper--lapbook

2. Ancient Egypt
Following along MOH, volume 1, we researched a bit about Ancient history including Egypt, the Jews in Egypt, etc. There is a HUGE selection out there for this subject--here are some sights I gleaned from:
Ancient Egypt for Kids
Homeschool Helper--lapbook
Old Testament Bible Lessons

3. Flowers
We studied the parts of a flower in science and thought it would be an easy one to include the 3yo also. Yep--easy to find preschool lapbooks, not so easy to find for the 1st and 2nd graders.
Most of what we did we made up from various worksheets and free printables. They made flowers out of the letter F (green with sequins arranged for the petals)
Although I don't have all the pdfs in one file, you can search for your own, start with this or contact me for some of my files...
http://lapbooksbycarisa.homestead.com/Lapbooks.html

4. Fire Safety
I did practically no searching for these resources. It was a topic at our library's storytime and we came home with coloring and activity handouts that turned into a lapbook for my 6yo boy. We used letter and number stickers on the cover and learned about when to call 9-1-1. That was just a week he needed more stuff to do and actually WANTED to cut, color, and glue.
Letter "F" pages

5. Animal Classification

This study came after going through Usborne First Encyclopedia of Animals in our Sonlight Science 1. The lapbook came almost completely from HomeschoolShare. Basically, the kids just needed to cut and paste while learning.
I also got info from PBS-Animal Classes and Missouri Botanical Garden.
This was an incredible resource also.
I hope to do these animals for the 3yo and 19month old sometime soon--you know--whenever I get around to it and have the paper and ink! LOL

The best thing I've done and know I'll continue to do is to make a master notebook. I make 1 extra copy of anything we use, 3hole punch it and put it into a binder with dividers. I have one binder for our history, including all the worksheets, printables, lessons, etc. that I find to go along with MOH, V1. (We're only doing a quarter per semester).....this includes the Ancient Egypt Lapbook and another binder for all other lapbooks. If we do unit studies or notebooks, I'll make another master binder for those.
WHY a Master Notebook?!?!?!
Because I have MORE kids and many more years of school to teach. We will study all these things again and I have a start for what we'll do, at least for the younger set of kids.

Now--HOW I have organized on my computer...........
In my documents I have a folder for homeschool and a subfolder for lapbooks. When I decide to look for a certain subject to lapbook, I make another subfolder and name it. Then I search--just google what I want. When I find stuff I like, I "save target as" directly into that folder {I prefer pdf files, but if they aren't, then I create a Word doc and save a list of sites on that subject}. THEN when it comes time to DO the lapbook, I open that folder and look through everything to see what I want, then print it in duplicate (or triplicate if it's for 2 kids) and file it (or set it on my desk as a "to do" project--haha--I mean, let's be real!).

I'm a-learnin' and I hope this helps someone, even me being the newbie that I am
After all, it's JUST ME!

Humbling shopping trip

well, nothing like having to swallow my pride and admit my faults.....

What are those faults, you say? WELL.....for starters, I'm kinda scatterbrained.....

Went to Walgreen's to get one last deal on Dove shampoo and conditioner. My friend brought me some coupons so I could get the best deal possible (I only had 2 coupons, she gave me 6 more). GREAT!! Paying $.75/1 -12oz shampoo is a great deal, right? Got my 8 shampoos in the cart, went to check out and canNOT find my coupons!! Make excuses to the cashier and go stand in an aisle to search. After finally taking EVERYthing out of my bag, checking all my pockets twice, going thru all my coupon stashes, I'm debating--do I find my friend and admit what I did? UGH.....they were in my hand--and then--they weren't.........
Well, knowing I can't walk out without buying something and I don't want to pass up this incredible deal, I swallow my pride, humble myself and admit I am the most scatterbrained unorganized couponer you will ever find.........THEN, wal-la THERE they are! Stuck between pages in my photo/coupon holder.........I hand back the 2nd stack of coupons from dear friend who was in the midst of trying to rescue me from my brain fart and proceed to checkout.......

Thank goodness I did not have the kids--probably would've been shouting at them and crying in my despair (oh, how petty, I know!! it's shampoo for crying out loud!)
AHHH.............Just me...................

FREE lapbooking and notebooking resources

My lapbooking experience is very limited, but I only use freebies that I can find online. Here are some of my best sources:
www.homeschoolshare.com
www.homeschoolhelperonline.com
www.currclick.com {sort by price and just look at the free stuff--new ones every week or so!}
www.filefolderfun.com
www.lapbooklessons.com Must sign up--but it's free.
When deciding what to do a lapbook on, I look at what we are studying already. For example: in MOH we covered a lot of Ancient Egypt, so I threw together this and that for a lapbook (LOTS of sources for this topic--it was hard to narrow it down!) For science last year, we studied butterflies--and that was our first lapbook. Little mini science ones have been simple to do--it's just a place to store the info we are learning already ina very cute and creative way.
I have a masters notebook where I put one copy of everything we use. This way i have it for the next set of kids or later when we study that same subject.
More sites and blogs to check out:
http://simplylapbooks.blogspot.com/
www.squidoo.com and then search for what you want! I have personnally found BibleLessons, HistoryLessons, a China Unit Study, Thanksgiving lapbook, templates, what is lapbooking?, and how to lapbook, among others.

Kroger redeeming coupons via cell phones

This is taken from http://www.detnews.com/
Although I don't have a local Kroger, I find this very interesting!

Saturday, January 24, 2009
Kroger system redeems coupons from cell phones
Jaclyn Trop / The Detroit News
Cutting a stack of coupons from the Sunday newspaper has helped pass many an afternoon, but now Michigan's largest grocer wants customers to trim their grocery bills from the comfort of their own phones.
Time-crunched shoppers can download coupons on their BlackBerries, iPhones and other mobile devices now that the Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. has unrolled a mobile coupon program at all 2,477 Kroger locations nationwide.
Savings apply to dozens of national brands including Colgate Palmolive, General Mills and Kimberly-Clark.
"Retailers have a wider generation of shoppers shopping with them than they ever had before," said Kroger spokesman Dale Hollandsworth. Younger consumers have come to expect Internet and mobile-based savings, he said.
Coupon usage increases across all ages and income levels when the economy is down. Coupon redemption is up 72 percent nationwide, according to an August consumer poll by Massachusetts-based marketing consultant Prospectiv. Internet coupon usage has surged by 73 percent since 2005, according to a report by Scarborough Research.
Mobile couponing, savings that can be accessed on the go, represents the next frontier. However, no other major supermarket chain has debuted a program of Kroger's scope, according to the Food Marketing Institute and the Michigan Grocers Association.
Twelve million people, or 5.2 percent of mobile subscribers, received at least one coupon on their
mobile phones in November, according to the latest data available from market research firm comScore Inc. That's a 66 percent increase over the year before.
Coupons link to an account Kroger partnered with San Jose, Calif. digital company Cellfire to create the program and tested it last summer at 20 Kroger stores in Metro Atlanta. More than half of consumers in the pilot program redeemed more than one coupon, according to Hollandsworth.
Customers can register for a coupon savings account at
www.cellfire.com from their mobile phone or computer. Entering their mobile phone number and Kroger Savings Plus card number links the coupons to the account. Shoppers can then browse coupons from their phones or computers and click on desired deals, which are then loaded onto the grocery card and redeemed at checkout.
Used or expired coupons are removed from the Cellfire account. New grocery offers appear every two weeks.
The service is free of charge but standard mobile usage charges may apply, depending on the carrier or data plan, according to Cellfire.
Convenience of Web coupons
Web coupons represent just 0.4 percent of the multi-billion dollar coupon industry, but are expected to grow.
Sunday newspaper inserts account for more than 88 percent of total coupons, according to the Promotion Marketing Association. Magazines. Direct mail and in-store handouts account for the rest.
Sunday newspaper inserts are "still predominant, but there is a tilt towards tech-based coupon delivery systems," said Jeffrey Stoltman, Wayne State University marketing professor.
Web coupons are often more convenient for consumers, who can search for deals quickly and don't need to remember to bring their clippings to the store.
"Clipping is laborious," Stoltman said, "but a couple of clicks on a keyboard and you're there."
Mobile couponing has great potential "given the number of cell phones out there," according to Charles Brown, co-chair of the Promotion Marketing Association Coupon Council.
Paperless coupon systems can also save money for retailers who spend "tens of millions of dollars in processing costs collectively," said Dan Kihanya, vice president of consumer marketing for Cellfire.
However, mobile couponing is a new behavior and retailers could lose customers who don't have cell phones or don't feel comfortable with technology, WSU's Stoltman warned.
Savings can be substantial
Kroger shopper Nancy McKinley of Grosse Pointe said she was not aware of Kroger's mobile couponing program but would welcome a more convenient alternative to newspaper clipping.
McKinley, who saves between $5 and $15 with coupons at Kroger each week, said she generally sets aside newspaper coupon inserts and goes through them every couple of months.
"A lot of times they've expired before I get to them," she said. "You've got to save money."

Just me saying hi!

I'm new at the whole blog thing and although I like to talk and type, when it comes down to starting out, I'm at a loss for words. You can check out my profile, but I'll just share about my life here.......
I'm a homeschool mom of 4, my oldest girl H just turned 8 on Jan. 3 (oh, my, where did the time go?!?) and we're doing 2nd grade with her. She enjoys books a lot and is inthe 2nd grade Rod & Staff math, english, phonics, and reading. We also use Spelling Power.
My 2nd, oldest boy J is 6 and doing 1st grade work. He uses Horizons math and Pathway Publishers phonics and reading.
For history we started Mystery of History this year (www.themysteryofhistory.com) and have continued with Sonlight Science (www.sonlight.com) and some of their history spine.
We recently discovered lapbooks and LOVE making those. I'll list some of the resources we use at some point---LOVING various blogs and freebie sites!!
My 2nd girl, R, is 3 and just has to do school with the others.
My baby boy, L, will be 2 in June and is into absolutely everything......
My husband JJ and I have been married 10 years this coming July.
That's just me..........and mine.....
